Intercontinental Cup 2026: PSG Await as Qatar’s December Route Takes Shape

Paris Saint-Germain know where their Intercontinental Cup defence will end. What they do not yet know is who will be standing at the other end of the pitch.

The European champions are due to play the final on December 16 at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar. Three clubs still have a route to that meeting: Mexico’s Toluca, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and the eventual winners of the Copa Libertadores.

With the schedule confirmed earlier this month and the South American place still open, the useful question is how the December matches connect.

Three dates to follow

  • December 9: Toluca face the 2026 Copa Libertadores winners in the Derby of the Americas at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha.
  • December 12: The winners meet Mamelodi Sundowns in the Challenger Cup at the same venue.
  • December 16: The Challenger Cup winners face PSG in the final at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.

PSG’s official announcement sets out that sequence. The South American representative will be decided in the Libertadores final on November 28, so naming a specific opponent for Toluca now would get ahead of the competition.

Why PSG enter straight into the final

The route is deliberately uneven. Under the format, the UEFA Champions League winners qualify directly for the final, while the other continental representatives contest the remaining place. PSG therefore need one victory in Qatar; Toluca or the Libertadores champions would need three.

Sundowns are one step closer. They reached the Challenger Cup by beating Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli 2-1 in Pretoria on September 19, as reported by Euronews and Sportstar. Their December task starts with a single match for the right to challenge the European champions.

That structure gives the tournament a different rhythm from a group-stage competition. There is little room to recover from a poor evening, and the route itself becomes part of the story: how many knockout matches a team must survive before it reaches the final.

This is not the expanded Club World Cup

The names can be confusing. The Intercontinental Cup is FIFA’s annual competition involving the champions of its six continental confederations. It is separate from the expanded Club World Cup, which takes place every four years.

Qatar is hosting the final three matches for a third consecutive year. PSG return as defending champions after beating Flamengo on penalties in the previous edition. Retaining that title is the aim, not an outcome already secured by reaching the final.

What remains unsettled

The bracket is clearer than the final line-up. The November 28 Libertadores final will fill the remaining South American place; the December 9 and 12 matches will then determine PSG’s opponent. Until those results are in, the most accurate preview is a route map rather than a prediction.
