Updated November 1, 2026: This article was revised after MAP, citing local authorities, reported that four people were killed in the crash. An earlier version reported three dead based on initial reports from Saturday.
Four people were killed and 29 others injured when a passenger bus overturned on the Amskroud slope on the motorway outside Agadir in the early hours of Saturday, October 31, MAP reported, citing local authorities.
The accident occurred overnight from Friday to Saturday at kilometer marker 411+700 on the motorway linking Marrakech to Agadir, following a collision involving several vehicles. According to earlier reports, two cars and a truck collided violently before the bus, which was traveling in the same direction, overturned.
Three women were among those who died, according to MAP. Four of the injured are in serious condition, and all those affected were taken to Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir. Around 15 ambulances were mobilized to evacuate the injured, and an investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of the accident.
Earlier tolls on Saturday
Initial reports on Saturday gave lower and conflicting figures. State broadcaster SNRT reported three deaths and 33 injured, citing Professor Abdelkrim Elkharroubi, director of the Specialties Hospital at the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir. He told SNRT that all of the injured were in stable condition, around two thirds had been discharged after treatment, 11 remained in hospital, and four were being treated in intensive care.
Assabah reported four dead and 28 injured, and Actu-Maroc reported that one of the dead was an authority agent. MAP’s updated figure of four dead and 29 injured, citing local authorities, is the latest confirmed toll.
Royal Gendarmerie, civil protection units and local authorities were deployed to the scene, with human and logistical resources to treat the injured, take them to hospital and recover the victims from the damaged vehicles, the reports said.
A known black spot on the Agadir-Marrakech route
The Amskroud slope is regarded by transport professionals and drivers as one of the accident black spots on the Agadir-Marrakech route because of its steep descent, which requires drivers, particularly of heavy vehicles, to keep safe distances and control their speed. The motorway is equipped with escape ramps designed to stop vehicles whose brakes fail.
